Bible Study Resources for Women

Teaching the Bible has been an incredible opportunity for me, and it has served to deepen my trust in a good God and to challenge me to grow more personally in my time in His word.  I especially love studying the Bible with other women; it’s so awesome to see how God teaches us as we dive in together!  This short list of Bible study resources for women might help you in your personal or group Bible study as well – that’s my hope and prayer!  Read the Bible for yourself and also gather together with others to study it.  Beyond the (vital) weekly discipline of gathering with your church family, studying the Bible personally and in a small group are great ways to gain accountability, insight, and wisdom!

I grew up in church and have memories of sitting in worship services and youth events from the time I was very small.  Seeds were planted there about loving God, knowing more about Him, and living life as He had called me to live it.  It was as a young teenager that my faith and life as a Christian really began to develop roots, and move from a largely emotion-driven understanding of Jesus, to one based on His steadfastness.  I’ve grown more passionate over the years about the importance of “biblical literacy,” a deep understanding of the Bible, in helping us have a faith in God that is steady and sturdy.  Whether it’s personal study or group study, going further with what we learn at church or sitting around a table in a small group, God longs for us to know him more intimately through His word.  Here are some of my favorite resources in doing that.

Books on how to study the Bible

  • Women of the Word (Jen Wilkin)  an excellent resource from an amazing Bible teacher on how to actually study the Bible
  • A Slow and Certain Light: Thoughts on the Guidance of God (Elizabeth Elliot)  Not so much a Bible study how-to as a personal testimony, Elizabeth’s books, one by one, testify to God’s goodness, His faithfulness, and they call women to go “further up and further in” in their relationship with Him.
  • Mama Bear Apologetics (Hillary Morgan Ferrer and Nancy Pearcey) This apologetics book isn’t just for moms.  It profoundly challenged and equipped me to understand and combat incorrect worldviews and it made for a life-changing study with a group of young moms I joined weekly.
  • Words of Delight (Leland Ryken) Better, maybe, for a mature Christian, this book is an interesting and captivating at scripture through genre and the beauty of the words themselves.
  • A Woman’s Guide to Reading the Bible in a Year: A Life-Changing Journey Into The Heart Of God Paperback (Diane Stortz) I purchased this book and REALLY hope to use it in a small group study with a select group of women!  It’s a unique format with journal in discussion-type questions connected to daily/weekly readings.  It’s practical and insightful and would make a great complement to an in-app yearly Bible reading plan.

Bible Studies – Printed Books

  • Engaging God’s Word: Philippians (Community Bible Study) A great series of short studies (4-6 weeks) perfect for new Christians or those wanting to grow in understanding God through His word.
  • Discovering the Real Jesus (Rebecca Manley Pippert) Becky is passionate about teaching people how to start gospel-focused conversations.  This book is wonderful for a first-time Bible study with someone just coming to encounter Jesus.  It’s great for short-term one-on-one study
  • Walking With God In the Season of Motherhood (Melissa B. Kruger) This would be excellent for an in-home or small group study for moms in many seasons, and a great follow-up for outreach ministries like MOPS, etc…

Bible Study Ministries/Groups

Community Bible Study An international, parachurch organization, CBS is a weekly in-depth Bible study with small group discussion and large group teaching time.  It also has an incredible children’s ministry where kids study the Bible at the same time as their parents.  This ministry was instrumental in some of my greatest growth in understanding scripture and becoming more disciplined and falling in love with!) with study.

Inspiring Welcome {in our relationship with God through His word},
