Here are some of my favorite devotional resources for you! None is really necessary (except a Bible – get one you’ll treasure for years and even generations, if you can!). I highly recommend having a favorite pen and journal, and all the rest are just nice-to-have. Oh, and they make great gifts, too.
Bibles
I was sent this CSV notetaking Bible from Christian Book Distributors and it is lovely in person. It’s not my favorite version for in-depth study, but it is wonderful for note-taking and journaling!
I bought this cloth-covered journaling Bible as a gift for a friend and it is beautiful! I love having a journaling Bible to take notes in the margins (because I’ve been taking notes in the minuscule margins of my non-journaling Bible for decades anyway).
This is the leather journaling Bible I bought for my son – it is well-loved.
Bible Study Devotional Resources
An excellent post about daily Bible reading from The Gospel Coalition
Pens
Our very favorite Staedtler pens for underling and writing notes in our journaling Bibles; my daughter loves them so much we sent her around the world with a set to use in her own Bible study time. They last a very long time, they rarely bleed through pages, they come in amazing colors, and the case is perfect for keeping them organized. I love that the case can be set at an angle for easy access while I’m working. (We sometimes buy these individually at Michaels when we have a coupon.)
This smaller case of Staedtler pens in nature colors is my favorite set, and it’s perfect to carry in my bag.
I hate to admit that I hoard these pens rather unkindly. I have them tucked into every space I might ever want to write, including our library cabinets, my purse, my pen pouch, my desk, and my study bin. I’m not very nice when they’re stolen, either. Is this a problem?
I love how vibrant and smooth these highlighters are. I recommend them for journaling, not for Bible pages, which are much thinner.
Journals
Moleskine journals are inexpensive, sturdy, thin, and travel well. I always dream of my great-grandchildren finding them and reading of God’s conviction and faithfulness.
I love how these thin Rae Dunn journals fit perfectly inside my Bible cover for notes during church.
Our son loves this leather journal we bought him as a gift.
The leather wraps on this journal, along with the 6″x8″ size, make it perfect for travel.
This smaller 5″x7″ leather journal has been another favorite of one of our sons. It feels luxurious.
One teen-aged son has used this sturdy zippered leather journal for several years for our morning podcast/sermon notes.
Notebooks
I am completely hooked on discbound planners, and I use a discbound notebook for devotional study, prayer, and teaching prep.
This leather discbound cover is very similar to the Martha Steward cover I have (no longer available) for my daily planner (if you like the classic robin-egg blue, this one is just like mine, which is cream). I don’t use it for my daily study, but I do keep several devotional resources like prayer guides and scripture lists in the “personal” section.
A less expensive discbound notebook (many colors available) is where I house my teaching notes for a community Bible study I co-lead.
I’ve used many versions of the Classic Happy Planner; I like this journal version!
This discbound faith-based journal was inspired by the movie War Room – I haven’t seen it in person, but I love the idea!
Bible Covers & Cases
The Bible I use most is the one I’ve had since college; I love that I can “feel” where the pages are and I can see references to what I was learning in my notes from over a decade ago. BUT carrying my precious Bible means lots of wear and tear. The cover I currently have isn’t my favorite, but this leather Bible cover is on my list.
Favorite Accessories
While these accessories aren’t necessarily just devotional resources, the’re fun additions to my reading corner and my daily study time. If you have a little extra budget or space, they’re great to have!
I use this fabric zippered pen/supply case almost daily. It definitely proves my office supply addiction, but it’s great to carry in my work bag, and it fits post-it notes, business cards, ear buds and a small ruler.
Our son received this leather pen case for his birthday one year and it’s one of his favorite treasures (I love this zippered leather pen case!).
This pen loop makes a great addition to my discbound notebook, so I’m never without a favorite pen.
