DIY Vintage Map Pallet Frame {Pallet Wood Canvas Frame}

I’ve been loving the look of vintage maps for quite a while (late to join the party, maybe?).  I think I’m drawn to maps and globes because they remind me that this world is so much bigger than me… and that I’m called out into it to live and love.

When it saw this idea for using a vintage map to hide a flat screen tv, it made me almost willing to put the giant flat-screen my husband dreams of tv into the main living space (which we’ve refused to do to this point).  That hasn’t happened yet, but when I saw this super inexpensive (read: cheap!) canvas at a local discount store, I had to grab it, and it could be my first little bit of map art.  It needed a little sprucing up to give it more presence, though… and let’s be honest, give it more character (read: look less cheap) than it was.

Back to my stack of leftover pallet wood I went.  Armed with a couple bottles of metallic paint, I built a simple flat frame piece that I screwed onto the back of the canvas.  It took a few tries to get my measurements accurate (total authenticity here – I almost NEVER measure/level/do things accurately, which drives my daughter and husband mad, and often causes me twice the work I’m trying to save, and I should’ve finished building the frame before I tried to screw it into the MDF canvas frame for a lot more stability).  However, now that it’s finished, I’m loving the warm bit of copper and how it makes the canvas look just that much higher quality than it really is.  Sometimes the budget has to win… Okay, pretty much always.

What do you think?  Do you have cool frame ideas you’ve used in your own home?

Now to decide what project to work on next!

Is your style more rustic/farmhouse?  I loved this cute idea for a similar “frame” from Thistlekeeping.
